PEACE PROJECT - 2021 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
During the summer of1968, in the aftermath of the assassinations of Marlin Luther King, Jr. (April 4) and Robert F. Kennedy (June 6), my parents packed up our family from Connecticut suburbs and drove us to volunteer with the Children's Storefront in Harlem. Founded by Ned O'Gorman, a family friend, I learned at the young age of eight that we were privileged compared to children in Harlem, which began an important journey in my life to make a difference serving nonprofit organizations.
Given systemic racial injustice in America and worldwide, I continue to weigh the choices we make as citizens of democracy regardless of race, creed, or class to raise awareness and participate in change. As a small effort, I began a project in 2021 to establish a "community event" to encourage people to trace the outline of "P.E.A.C.E." (in snow) on the day of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday, in January. That's what led me to consider creating a GPS-word-art-project with 250-foot high, by 60-foot wide letters spelling PEACE in a farm field in Essex, NY. My long-range goal is to inspire millions of people to take the day to trace these steps (in places like the Mall of Washington or Central Park in NY) and to volunteer and donate on this day to honor the sacrifice of leaders like MLK and RFK who put personal caution aside to make a difference as a public servant.
